THE ENLIGHTENMENT PROJECT
An exploration of Western history
2018-2022, series of 35 archival inkjet prints
Exhibitions:
PG gallery192, August 2022
Bowen Galleries, September 2022
In an attempt to understand Western history and its world-wide impact Marian Maguire made this new suite of prints that map philosophical ideas, politics, scientific discoveries, inventions, and historical events. Her starting point was the Age of Enlightenment – it was during that era that Cook’s Endeavour first dropped anchor in waters around Aotearoa New Zealand. She travelled both backwards in time, to classical antiquity, and forwards to the end of the nineteenth-century to create a framework that is expressed in the two main bookish images: Sight and Blindness I: Reason and Sight and Blindness II: Expansion. It also includes the Diagrams that plot their key ideas, and the smaller Eye works that expand on visual details.
A catalogue accompanies this series, featuring essays by Elizabeth Rankin, Giovanni Tiso, Sally Blundell and Marian Maguire.
Marian is currently working on a separate Appendix to the catalogue, which lists the entries Sight and Blindness I and II, gives original publication details of the books (where they are available), and some notes about the contents. The Appendix will be available as a downloadable pdf.
