The New Zealand Defence Force recently commissioned Marian Maguire to make an artwork to commemorate seventy years since the war in the Pacific and invited her to be part of a delegation that traveled to New Caledonia, where the NZ war dead are buried, for the commemoration and for the Anzac Day service in April, 2013. The delegation included over 70 veterans and Marian feels privileged to have had the unique opportunity to talk with many of them about their experiences.
The lithograph she made on return represents young men of the era, one from each of the services - Air Force, Army and Navy, and a veteran who has marked Anzac Day every year in remembrance of his own service and that of his comrades, both those who came back and those who were lost. For Maguire it is about how the past stays with us. This lithograph is available through PaperGraphica on the NEW WORK page. |
