BOOGIE WOOGIE WITH GORDON WALTERS ‘These are a play between the works of Gordon Walters and those of Piet Mondrian, both of whose work I admire. I have kept to the horizontal lines of Gordon Walter’s koru paintings, with their curvaceous turnarounds and occasional free moving circles, and applied to that Mondrian’s commitment to red, blue, yellow, black, grey and white. While making these works I listened to Bebop jazz, which was coming to the fore when Mondrian painted ‘Broadway Boogie Woogie’. I first started working on this theme in 2016.’ Marian Maguire |
