TE KOHA 2012-14, acrylic and varnish on timber and panel. Gifted to Ngaruahinerangi in March 2018, this fireplace is painted with scenes, people and objects that relate to tribal history. Te Koha has been renamed by the people as: Te Toi o Takuahi, My Heavenly Fireplace. It is being looked by the Ngati Hāua hapu of Ngaruahine on a marae in South Taranaki, New Zealand. Riwha Titokowaru, who featured in Marian Maguire's 2011 series, Titokowaru's Dilemma, is an important ancestor/tupuna of Ngaruahine. It is hoped the fireplace will be used as a prompt for storytelling and discussion on the marae. |
